Still Here

I'm still here. I disappeared for a while, but that is becaused I needed inspiration and time to plan a wedding. After looking at other blogs I decided to change everything about my blog.

When I post it will be about my life and becoming a wife. Being a wife isn't easy, but I want that to be so fun for Mr. and I. We will learn and we will grow together.

Let Them Eat Cake!

I've had a craving for anything sweet lately! So today's wedding tradition is the wedding cake! Personally, I think wedding cakes are a bit much. I think they are overpriced and can sometimes be dry! We have an amazing cake baker in our area, so I'm hoping that whatever we choose will be incredibly mouth watering!!

First appearing in the middle of the17th century and well into the early 19th century, was a popular dish called the bride's pie. The pie was filled with sweet breads, a mince pie, or may have been merely a simple mutton pie. A main "ingredient" was a glass ring. An old adage claimed that the lady who found the ring would be the next to be married. Bride's pies were by no means universally found at weddings, but there are accounts of these pies being made into the main centerpiece at less affluent ceremonies. The name "bride cakes" emphasized that the bride was the focal point of the wedding. Many other objects also were given the prefix "bride," such as the bride bed, bridegroom and bridesmaid.

By the late 19th century, wedding cakes became really popular, and the use of the bride's pie disappeared. Early cakes were simple single-tiered plum cakes, with some variations. It was a while before the first multitiered wedding cake of today appeared in all its glory.

Wedding Tradition Thursday!!!

Eeekkk I've been absent. From wedding planning to work, life got hectic. BUT I'm back and I have a doozy for "WTT"......


Veils

Obviously, veils come in a variety of styles. Some are more modern, some more more traditional and classic, and others....well, others just need to not be worn.

The veil originally symbolized the bride's virginity, innocence, and modesty. The veil can be traced back to Roman times when it was a complete head to toe cover (that was later used as her burial shroud!). This symbolism has been lost over the years but the veil is still customarily worn. In some Middle Eastern and Asian cultures, the veil was worn to hide the bride's face completely from the groom who had never seen her (i.e. veil with blusher). Only after they were married would the groom be allowed the lift the veil to see his new wife's face.

No idea, whether I'll be wearing a veil or not, but if so, I'm leaning towards a modern option or something classic and timeless.

New Chapter

This weekend I moved out of my house in downtown Charleston. I have mixed feelings about this. I NEEDED to move out because the room was becoming too small and I needed more space.  I NEEDED to move out because while I miss college and I want college kids to enjoy their time--I feel old and when all of my neighbors get belligerently drunk 5 nights a week..I just can't take it.

I will miss the convenience of getting to work in 3 minutes, the convenience of walking to the gym, the convenience of walking to the farmer's market or to shop on King Street, the convenience of walking home from the bars, and the convenience of my runs along the Battery. But I definitely NEEDED this. Here are some pictures of the house that I called "home" for the last two years. This is the house where Matt and I had dessert after we got engaged. It has so many memories!!

Tradition Thursday

I'm posting this today, because I'm headed to Maryland to watch Katie tie the knot!!

Ever wonder why the bride's family has to pay for the wedding?? Let's be honest, it isn't cheap, and you almost think it's not fair!

Well, it has become a tradtion that the bride's family pays for the wedding and the groom's family pays for the rehearsal dinner. This stems back to the olden days when the bride's family had to provide a dowry (money, goods, estate a woman brings to the marriage) to the groom.  By taking her as his wife, he becomes her provider and her protector and the dowry is a payment for these services. The groom's parents also had to pay a "bride price" to the parent's of the bride. Thus, we have our modern day wedding and rehearsal dinner situation.

*Husband-to-be...can't my parents just give you a $100 to be my provider and protector for life? ;)

I actually am very excited about this because it is nice to know my friends care about me and like to know how I am and what I'm doing. My blog certainly is not insightful, deep, or life-changing...but it is my life. And I love it!

Wedding Tradition Thursday

I went to a bridal show last weekend. My first, and it was EXTREMELY overwhelming. It was basically a lot of vendors trying to sell me things and tell me why I should choose them. I'm not getting married in Charleston so it is a moot point. Once I told them, they so kindly moved me along! While I was there I did learn an interesting fact about bridal bouquets.

Why do brides carry bouquets? Not that I don't absolutely love flowers especially roses and peonies...but how did it start?

During the Middle Ages, people (men and women) took their bath

O-N-C-E a year around April when the weather was starting to warm up. Marriages traditionally took place in June, and by that time the women had started to smell a bit. Therefore the bride would carry flowers to help cover the offensive odor.

*Husband-to-be...I PROMISE you I will shower on June 25...and every day before that.....and every day after that.

Wedding Tradition Thursday!!

I'm starting something new. On Thursdays I will try and blog about a marriage or wedding tradtion. It probably won't be EVERY Thursday because it is 352 days until I say "I do" and I can't imagine there are THAT many traditions.

Tradition: Placing the Wedding Ring on the Third Finger of the Left Hand

This tradition has two possible origins. Some say ancient Egypt, while others say 17th century Europe.  The Egyptians believed that the "vien of love" ran directly from the ring finger to the heart, therefore the ring was place to denote eternal love.

During the 17th century wedding ceremony, the groom would slide the ring part way up the bride's thumb, index finger, and middle finger as the priest said "In the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit." As the ring finger was the first free finger, the ring was placed there.

I think I'll follow the Egyptians belief. I am such a r:o:m:a:n:t:i:c so the vien of love and eternal love get me every time.

Virginia!!

Matt and I are headed to VA for the long weekend. I know I don't have many readers, but for those that do read I wanted to let you know that Matt and I are now engaged!!

Stay tuned as I begin the ridiculous process of planning the happiest day of my life 7 hours from where I live!!

Bachelorette Weekend Numero Uno Wrap Up

This weekend I went to Edisto Beach for Kylee's bachelorette weekend. I wanted to host a shower for my future sister! So I chose to have a "spice up your marriage" shower and it was so much fun....

I made strawberry cupcakes and we had fruit and pound cake with chocolate and cream cheese dipping sauce.

We had a game where Kylee had to answer questions about Si. She got 20 out of 31. Impressive.

The other game involved decorating undies for Kylee. The winner was the pair she would most likely wear on her honeymoon. It was SUCH a fun game!!!!

Goody Spin Pin

Have you seen the commercials for this new product??

I am a sucker for commercial gimics, and when I saw this new product I started loooking for it immediately!! Well, today I found it and I must say I am impressed.  If you have ever tried putting your hair in a sloppy bun w/out ponytail holders or 1 million bobby pins, you might know that it is pretty much impossible.

I have very thin and fine hair, so bobby pins don't hold it in a bun whatsoever. The spin pins simply twist through the bun and so far they are holding it up nicely!!

Try it out!

Bachelorette Weekend Numero Uno

This weekend I am headed to Edisto for Kylee's (Matt's sister) bachelorette party. I have been planning this for weeks as I'm hosting a "special" shower for the bride to be. It will be so fun...pictures to come next week!!

Visit to Charleston

This weekend I know there are some friends and fellow BC alum coming to Charleston! I'm excited because THEY are so excited. So I've been thinking of things to do, things to see, and places to eat. Sometimes if you are visiting you fall into the traps...like Hyman's Seafood. It is a really popular place for tourists, but there is MUCH better seafood in town! So girls, if you are looking for things to fill your day, this is my list of things and places I recommend.

On the weekend:
-Go to Folly Beach. Make sure you lay behind the Holiday Inn. Why? That's where the beach bar is and that is where the public restrooms and foot showers are. ( a plus for any female!!)
-While you're at Folly-stop over at Taco Boy . The guacamole is awesome. Oh and so are the screwdrivers and the sangria margarita!
-Isle of Palms and Sullivan's are great beaches too!
-If you want to explore the city or get to know the history, the harbor tour is the best. It talks about the history of Charleston and you get the nice breeze off of the water!
-At night: Anything near The Market will be fun:
      Mad River=late night, tons of dancing, hot, sweaty
      Pearlz=great starting out point, and FABULOUS for oyster shots
      Rooftop at Vendue=also a great bar on the roof of a building. The view is awesome.
      Henry's=always a must stop of mine!
      The Saloon=interesting...must be heavily intoxicated.
      Others: Squeeze, Brick, Light
-Crazy dance party=Trio near King Street.

Places to Eat:
Seafood=Coast, Fleet Landing, Hanks (upscale)
Southern=Virginia's on King, Jestine's Kitchen, Hominy Grill, Magnolia's, Slightly North of Broad (SNOB)
Breakfast=Joseph's on Meeting, Poogan's Porch, Hominy Grill
Others that I loveeeeee=Kickin Chicken (great for a quick lunch); Sette-awesome Italian; Basil-Asain
Most amazing dessert place everrrrr=Kaminsky's

Other things:
Great happy hour during the week=O'Malley's, Social
Good Pizza=Dalesandro's
Dessert=Freshberry or Cupcake
Shopping=King Street or Mt. Pleasant Town Centre

Cinnebarre

I love my city. I've been here less than 2 years and I feel like there is still so much I need to see & do.  Last night my roommate and I wen to the Cinnebarre to watch Sex and the City 2. It was my first time at this theater. Cinnebarre is great because it is a movie theater and restaurant combined! Where else can you go and watch a movie for a $5 ticket and get restaurant food like pizzas, burgers, and shakes??! It is so much better than a $9.50 movie ticket and EXPENSIVE buttered popcorn at a regular theater. Oh and the seats are so much better too!

You should check it out if you come visit Charleston!
